If you’re on Facebook, then you more than likely see many
extra postings that come through your newsfeed, such as sayings, jokes, grammar
rules, religious and political views, and whatever the “national day” is
happening for today. Some might be funny or make you cry, even get angry. Once in a while, I see one that absolutely
causes me to stop and think. I shared one the other day that you can read here:
https://www.facebook.com/PattySeitzWriter?ref=hl. It’s about what you are buying when you make
that book purchase. It goes well beyond just the book.
It suggests you are also buying the many days and months the
author put into the story. The editing, rewrites, frustrations and joys. The
author is sharing their work with the world. That is scary stuff! What startled me is the fact I never gave a lot of thought to the story
behind the story. You would think it
would be obvious to me considering I am a writer. Like most of us, I definitely have taken for
granted the books I read. Even if there is an author you read over and over
again and can’t wait for their next book to come out, do you ever think about
what that author went through to get it done? I’m the first to admit, I haven’t.
And that’s despite the fact I have been through the process three times now, so
I know the feeling.
I’m not suggesting that every time you read a book, you
should sit for a long time and think about the author. But maybe take a minute
to say thank you—whether you say it to yourself, write a review (you
can do that anonymously on Amazon), perhaps contact the author and let them
know your thoughts on the story, even if you didn’t like it. Maybe the
well-established authors won’t care, but I can tell you there isn’t an
indie author out there who wouldn’t appreciate a thank you, a review, a note
sharing your thoughts on his or her work.
